The Education Academy within Barts Health is expanding in response to the need with increasing numbers of students and trainees and commitment to offer the best educational experience for our trainees. There is a real need to ensure that students receive excellent tuition and that trainees have the best possible educational supervision. In line with our Education Strategy, we intend to improve education by building an Education Fellow faculty base made up of Specialty Teaching Fellows who contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate training, and support Inter-professional Innovations.
Barts Health Simulation Service has three dedicated Simulation and Essential Clinical Skills Centres based at Newham General Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital and the Royal London . Each of these centers has a proud history of being innovative and award winning. These departments are teaching areas with fully equipped simulation and clinical skills teaching and Haptic Clinical Skills facilities.
The post: The post would be based at the Whipps Cross University Hospital and is part of Barts NHS Trust.
The successful post holder for this post will be involved primarily with developing educational opportunities for Anaesthetic and Intensive Care Trainees at Whipps Cross Hospital through a wide range of teaching modalities including simulation based training, clinical skills, lectures, teaching clinics, a bedside teaching. The post holder will have the opportunity to work across sites with other education fellows. All our fellows are encouraged to undertake a PG Cert in Education and funding will be available to support this.
Whipps Cross Hospital provides the full range of local general hospital services as well as ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery and hyperbaric medicine. The Maternity Department includes Special Care Baby Unit, together with two operating theatres. There are approximately 5500 deliveries per year. The nationally recognised 9-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit and 6 bedded high dependency unit.
The contract is 12 month, fixed-term and is 50:50 teaching and service delivery. 50 % of the time will be dedicated to Education Delivery. 50% of the time will be undertaken for service delivery within anaesthesia, labour ward and intensive care. This is a 40 hour week contract with no on calls as part of this post.
This would typically suit anyone wishing to undertake further training in a medical specialty and education prior to or as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) and/or Out of Programme Training from their Specialist Registrar training programme. Prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and Deanery.
Post holder will be expected to have completed the full FRCA exam, and be training or working at ST3 or above /equivalent level.
The post will have opportunities to be involved in other teaching programmes including Foundation Trainees, and interdisciplinary simulation training.
Personal Development
The post holder would be responsible for their own personal development plan, with regards to both service and educational work. Regular appraisal must be undertaken with their
clinical supervisor, and the College Tutor for Anaesthetics. The post holder will work closely with the Lead for Simulation at Whipps Cross and Associate Director of Simulation to identify Educational Deliverables.
The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales), as amended from time to time.
