West Middlesex Hospital is a busy District General Hospital situated in Isleworth. The anaesthetic department typically consists of 14 juniors, a mix of training and non training grades, split between the SHO and registrar rota. There are 8 general theatres covering a range of surgical specialities including
The labour ward averages 5200 deliveries per year with plans to expand. The Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit have maximum capacity for 8 level 3 and 4 level 2 patients. As the theatre, obstetric and ICU rotas are not strictly split trainees day to day activities are varied between the 3.
There is often opportunity to develop independent practice. Out of hours the on call registrar covers the Intensive Care Unit and the SHO covers the High Dependency Unit and the emergency theatre, both supervised by a non resident consultant. Out of hours obstetric cover is provided by staff grades, as is the weekend emergency list from 8am til 6pm. Weekly departmental teaching takes place on a Friday afternoon. For those interested in formal teaching the education centre houses a state of the art simulation facility and they are always keen for new recruits to the faculty.
Practicalities
The hospital is easiest reached by car and there is ample staff car parking available. Syon Lane is the nearest train station, about a 10 minute walk away from the hospital. There is a WHSmith on site however the day to day food selection is distinctly average so best to bring your own!
